Wilma Velthuizen, age 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017.
Wilma was born in Barneveld, the Netherlands, on Oct. 13, 1937 to Teunis and Aartje (Eylander) Velthuizen. When Wilma was just 13, the family immigrated to Sumas. She attended Lynden Christian Schools through the eighth grade.
In 1962, Wilma moved to Seattle where she was employed by Virginia Mason hospital in food service. Wilma stayed for 25 years before moving on to the Norris Health Care Center.
Wilma was a member of Faith Community Church in Seattle. She was very involved as janitor, working in the kitchen and attending the many Bible studies. She loved to knit, crochet, embroider and sew and was an avid spoon collector. Wilma was known for being hard-working and caring.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Audrey Yakes and Henrietta Paterson, and brothers- and sister-in-law Tony (Clarice) Velthuizen and Everet Velthuizen.
She is survived by sisters Cobie Tiemersma, Tina Velthuizen and Gertrude Cuccia (George); brother-in-law Jim Yakes; sister-in-law Judy Velthuizen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in Gillies Funeral Home. The graveside service will be at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in Monumenta Cemetery, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service in First Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Phil Assink officiating.
