Judith (Judy) Gavin has gone home to the Lord after a long battle with breast cancer. She passed peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016.
Judy was born on May 21, 1940, in Denver. After moving to Berkeley, California, with her family, she attended Berkeley public schools. Upon graduation from the University of California at Berkeley as a Phi Beta Kappa honor student in 1963, she began her 35-year teaching career in Alaska. She was 31 years in Ferndale as a Central Elementary School teacher. Judy played piano for many Easter and Christmas celebrations as well as numerous musical productions even after her retirement in 2003. It was in Sitka, Alaska, that she met and married James Gavin. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past June.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Robson; and brother Jack.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jim; their two sons, Robert and Carl; her brother, Dick; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides singing in an a cappella choir at Berkeley High School and figure skating in college, her interests included gardening, travel, cooking and decorating.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at 2 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, 5904 Vista Dr., Ferndale.
