Joanne M. Barnes, age 77, of Lynden, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
She was born July 2, 1939 to parents John Edward and Marie Melseth Markusen. Joanne graduated from Blaine High School in the class of 1957. She married the love of her life, Darrel James Barnes, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on June 28, 1958.
Joanne was employed by the Lynden School District as a paraeducator at the middle school for 19 years. She loved spending time with her family and watching all their sporting events, traveling and socializing with friends, especially the breakfast club meeting at the Fairway Café. After they both retired, they spent the next 18 winters in Indio, California.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Ronald and Richard Markusen.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Darrel; sons John and Lorraine of Portland, Oregon, Dale and Cora of Mount Vernon, and Don and Shari of Browns Point, Washington; six grandchildren: Heidi, Joey, Kenna, Dan, Tim and Mark; five great-grandchildren; brother Ken and Pamela Markusen of Blaine; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at 3 p.m. in North County Christ the King Church, 1816 18th St., Lynden, WA 98264, with Pastor Kurt Langstraat officiating.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either Whatcom Hospice, 2806 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225 or ALS Association Evergreen Chapter, L-105, 19226 66th Ave. S, Kent, WA 98032.
