Hilda Elizabeth Kornelis, age 93, passed away on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. She was born April 10, 1923, in Sumas to Albert and Elizabeth
Mulder. She grew up on the farm with brother Alvin (deceased) and sisters Marian and Gladys.
Hilda attended Clearbrook School through the eighth grade. In 1945 she married Tom Kornelis. They lived in their Lynden house on C Street for over 50 years. Tom and Hilda adopted two children, Lee and then three years later Bev.
Hilda loved to read, pray, invite new people over for lunch, and talk on the phone. Her grandchildren Jon Kornelis, Lori Beaven, Sam Kornelis, Chad Kalsbeek, Amy Kalsbeek and Luke Kalsbeek remember Grandma for her Sunday lunch of spaghetti soup (spaghetti and wieners), cottage cheese and ice cream.
Hilda is survived by Lee and Sandy Kornelis and Dave and Bev Kalsbeek. She is also remembered by six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Sisters Marian Stremler and Gladys Haveman, along with many Kornelis in-laws, also survive her.
Memorial services were held in the Lynden United Reformed Church at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016. Memorials may be given in her name to her church, Lynden United Reformed.
