Henry “Hank” Scholten, age 97, went peaceably to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 20, 2017 in the comfort of his home with family present. He was born to William and Johanna Scholten on Aug. 14, 1920 in Holland, Minnesota, as the eighth of ten children.
Henry attended Lynden public schools through high school where he was on the basketball team, graduating in 1939. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy, on Dec. 30, 1941 in Lynden. World War II was just beginning and Henry enlisted in the Coast Guard where he served 3 1/2 years. On his return, he and Dorothy made their home in Lynden for several years before moving to the Wiser Lake area where Henry started a roofing business. The couple raised six children.
Henry loved meeting new people and sharing his love for the Lord with them. He started and finished every day with music and reading the Bible. When the kids started to leave the nest, traveling became great fun for Henry and Dorothy. As associate staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, they trained each summer in California and Colorado, and worked at conferences yearly. They enjoyed doing short-term mission trips to faraway places together, including Russia, Israel, China, Haiti and Yugoslavia, to name a few.
Henry was always on the go, had a keen sense of humor, and always looked for opportunities to minister to others. He made it a priority to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and serve those in need. His door was always open, he had a smile on his face, and he always had something positive to say. He became a very special friend to many people.
Henry and Dorothy had always been united in spirit and committed to each other. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in December 2016. His beloved Dorothy preceded him in death on April 28, 2017.
He is survived by his sister, Babe Bosman; six children, Gary Scholten, Connie Hill, Wayne Scholten, Jack Scholten, Judy Landrus and Dale Scholten; 32 grand- and great- grandchildren. Henry had a great love for his entire family and found much pleasure in spending time with them.
A graveside service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Henry’s honor may be made to North County Christ the King Church of Lynden.
