Edith Meenk Volkert Meyers died on Nov. 18, 2015, in Des Moines, Washington, due to pneumonia. She was 96 years old.
Mrs. Meyers was born on June 18, 1919, in Maurice, Iowa, to Arthur Meenk and Johanna VanPeursem Meenk. She was a graduate of Lynden High School and Western Washington College. After teaching in Mukilteo and Ravensdale, she joined the Women’s Army Corps for the duration of World War II. At the close of the war she married Paul Volkert and returned to Lynden. Later they made their permanent home in Burien. They had two children. Mr Volkert died in 1967.
She made a second marriage with Wally Meyers and gained five more daughters. She and Wally spent several years living in Germany, then returned to Burien, where they were active members of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church.
This year she was preceded in death by her only siblings, sister Lois and brother Allen.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Wally Meyers; her children, Carol Louise and Brian and their spouses; and grandchildren. She is also survived by Wally’s children Judy, Ruth, Marie, Debbie and Lois and their spouses, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; by her sister-in-law VerLee; and beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Evergreen Room of the Health Center at Wesley Homes. Interment will be on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. at Monumenta Cemetery.
Gilles Funeral Home will be responsible for graveside services.
