Dorothy Mallinson of Lynden passed away in the Christian Health Care Center on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at the age of 94.
Dorothy was born on May 11, 1922, in Prescott, England, to Ben and Margaret Barrell. Dorothy lived in England throughout her childhood. Dorothy and her family survived bombings in Liverpool during World War II. As a young woman Dorothy worked for Cunard Shipping Line in Liverpool. She married Derek Mallinson in 1949. Derek and Dorothy had two children while living in England, a daughter Diane, born in Huddersfield, England, followed by son Nigel, born in Preston, England. Derek and Dorothy moved from England to Canada in 1955. Due to Derek’s job they then moved to Rockford, Illinois, where Dorothy became a U.S. citizen, then later to Bellevue, where their son, Scott, was born.
Dorothy later moved to Whidbey Island to be closer to her daughter, Diane. Dorothy lived in Coupeville for 11 years. During that time she worked at the Honey Bear where her grandchildren often visited her for sweet treats. She also enjoyed selling Avon to local friends on the island. Dorothy moved to Lynden in 1990 when her daughter Diane and her husband relocated there. Dorothy often visited the senior center for lunch and enjoyed her weekly outings with her daughter.
Dorothy enjoyed time with her family, visiting her sons in California, and she visited her sister in England several times throughout her life, the last time being in 1999.
Dorothy loved sports, especially football. She enjoyed watching her favorite team play, the Oakland Raiders, every chance she got. She also enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play their favorite sports.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Margaret Barrell; and husband, Derek Mallinson.
Dorothy is survived by her sister, Margaret “Joan” Barrell, of Huyton, England; her children: Diane (Rick) Nelson of Lynden, Nigel (Margaret) Mallinson of Gilroy, California, and Scott Mallinson, also of Gilroy.
Dorothy had five grandchildren: Stacy White of Granite Falls, Amy (Roger) Dillon of Sumner, Lisa (Bill) Hart of Gilroy, California, Heidi (Brandon) Bush and Heather (Thor) Brincefield of Entiat, Washington; and nine great-grandchildren: Breanna, Conor, Hannah and Morgann White, Zack and Ella Dillon and Nelson, Kiley and Heather Jo Bush.
No services will be held.
