Boyd Ivan Kiel, of Ferndale, died on May 28, 2016 at home. He was born on Nov. 15, 1929 at Corsica, South Dakota to Harvey and Anne Vander Werff Kiel. He attended a one-room country school for eight years and graduated from Corsica High School in 1947 and then from Northwestern Junior College in 1949.
He was married to Ellen Roetman on June 14, 1950 in Lake Park, Iowa. They farmed in South Dakota, where their three children were born. In 1955 they moved to Lynden and operated a dairy farm while Boyd earned his bachelor’s degree at Western Washington College of Education (now WWU). Boyd taught math at Nooksack Valley High School, in Guam and at Meridian High School. He earned his master’s degree at WSU in 1966. He was also a part-time Customs officer for 20 years.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents and son Stan.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years; son Vic (Sandy); daughter-in-law Marcie; daughter Nancy; stepsister Carol (Fred) Rode; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Boyd appreciated the opportunity to participate in church activities all his life, the last 30 years at Wiser Lake Chapel.
A memorial service will be held at the Wiser Lake Chapel, 7121 Guide Meridian Rd., at 6:30 p.m. on June 9, 2016.
