Herbert Kliewer went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday night, May 2, 2018 while sleeping. Herbert was a month away from turning 79 years of age.
He was born on June 4, 1939 to Paul and Huldah Kliewer in a German village in Poland. At 5 years of age he and his family fled to Germany as Russia approached during World War II. They were hidden by the Mennonites throughout the war. Later, Herbert was diagnosed with epilepsy. When he was 17 years of age, the family moved to America to get help for his condition.
Herbert worked on a dairy farm in Blaine for almost 30 years until he had a fall that resulted in a broken neck. Thus he became a resident of Christian Health Care Center in Lynden. Many residents in Lynden are familiar with him wheeling around the area streets and parks all these years.
Herbert married Carolyn Wright in 2004 and they both resided at CHCC for many years. Herbert was able to move out of nursing care to live with his wife for the past year and a half in their own apartment in Lynden.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his sister, Martha Kliewer; his two brothers, Willy and Walter Kliewer; four step-children; seven grandchildren; and multiple nieces and nephews.
We will celebrate Herbert’s life with a memorial at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21, in Grace Baptist Fellowship, 338 N. Park St. off Depot Road in Lynden.
