Mel Byers, age 80, of Ferndale, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017.
He was born July 14, 1936 to parents Wilbur Ray and Pearl Emily (McElheney) Byers. He graduated from Ferndale High School in the class of 1955 and married Janice Jordan in Bellingham on Aug. 30, 1957. Mel worked in auto body his whole working career; he owned and operated Mel’s Auto Body for over 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joyce Herr, and brothers Robert, Theron and Wayne Byers.
Mel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janice; sons Don and his wife Jean, Ron, and Tom and his wife Sheila Byers; six grandchildren: Nicole and Kyle Pellham, Aaron and Victoria Halterman-Byers, Ryan and Ana Byers, Marlena Byers-Nicolaas and Mat, Corbin and Megan Hamilton-Byers and Trina Byers; four great-grandchildren: Collin and Emily Nicolaas and Jaxon and Cienna Byers; brother Francis Byers and his wife Beth; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
