Margaret Geneva (Dooyema) DeJong-Guthrie, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023 at age 93. She was born in Battle Plains Township, Rock County, Minnesota on March 11, 1930. Margaret was the daughter of Daniel and Rikkie (Baron) Dooyema. She grew up in Minnesota and married Arthur James DeJong in Edgerton, Minnesota on July 12, 1947.
Margaret and Art moved their family from Harrisburg, South Dakota to the Sumas area in 1960. Together, they operated their dairy farm on Telegraph Road.
Margaret enjoyed family trips to visit relatives and friends in the Midwest. She and Art derived much joy from their involvement in Nooksack Valley Reformed Church and Sumas Senior Center.
Margaret had a special gift of welcoming people to church and the senior center where she and Art attended regularly. Often, visitors became their guests at family meals, holiday gatherings and coffee time in their home.
For years, cherished family time included her children Reatha (Bert) Cammack of Bellingham, Jay (Debbie) DeJong of Sumas, Darlene (John) Dickinson of Lynden, Cammy (Steve) Roosma of Sumas, Arlan (Marcy) DeJong of Sumas, numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur (who died on Dec. 28, 2005), brothers Junior Dooyema and Harvey Dooyema, and sister Caroline Kortus. Margaret married Allen Guthrie on April 30, 2008.
On Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, a time of fellowship to commemorate Margaret will be held at Nooksack Valley Reformed Church from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
